Maria Bruno

(she/they) Maria Bruno joined Equality Ohio in August 2021 as the Public Policy Director. Maria was born and raised in Medina, Ohio, and has spent her career working to protect the basic and civil rights of underserved Ohioans. She is passionate about protecting the rights and livelihood of every Ohioan within the LGBTQ+ community.
Maria has fought for justice within our legal system from various angles over the years, including at the Franklin County Public Defender, ACLU of Ohio, America Votes, US Attorney’s Office White Collar Crime Division, and Legal Aid Society of New York City. She most recently served as the Civic Engagement Coordinator and Policy Analyst with the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO).
She began her community organizing efforts in college, advocating for socially responsible endowment investments and workers’ rights at her university. She has continued to work with local organizers and advocates on voting rights, access to affordable housing, and criminal justice and police reform, and serves on the Cleveland Votes Advisory Board.
Maria received her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, where she was named a Public Service Fellow with the Dean’s Highest Honors, was a staff editor at The Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law, and received the Judge Joseph H. Harter Memorial Award for Trial Practice. She received a B.A. with honors in Political Science with minors in Economics, French, and Spanish from the University of Pittsburgh.
