2/25/2025—Today, Ohio’s dangerous bathroom ban, SB 104, goes into effect. This law mandates that school bathrooms and facilities be restricted by assigned sex at birth, putting transgender youth at even greater risk of harm, harassment, and isolation. It gives schools a tool to police not only trans students but anyone authorities want to perceive as transgender.
As Equality Ohio Executive Director Dwayne Steward stated:
“We made it unmistakable to Governor DeWine and Ohio legislators that SB 104 does nothing to protect students—it does the opposite. This law will put transgender youth at even greater risk of harm, harassment, and isolation. By allowing this bill to become law, Governor DeWine has chosen to disregard the safety and dignity of trans students across Ohio. But let me be clear: Equality Ohio will not back down. We will continue to side with transgender youth and their families, fight for fairness, and work toward an Ohio where everyone is treated with the dignity they deserve.”
We take inspiration from the words of legendary Black trans activist Miss Major, who has long fought for our community’s survival:
“As a community, we have to get ourselves together first.”
