The Society

The Jim Obergefell & John Arthur Society is an Equality Ohio donor group focused on delivering strategic and smart donations to create a just and fair Ohio for LGBTQ+ people.

The society is named for Jim Obergefell, the named plaintiff in the historic marriage equality case, with his late husband John Arthur. Their inspiring struggle brought marriage equality to Ohio and the nation as a whole.

Jim Obergefell’s leadership is a strategic initiative to focus on several areas.

Equality Ohio advocates and educates to achieve fair treatment and equal opportunity for all Ohioans regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

The SocietyAreas of Equality

The society exists as a mechanism for applying resources to specific issues with focus and data-driven expertise.

Focus

Support Transgender Youth

Transgender visibility is on the rise, and transgender youth need to be supported to mitigate the high risks of violence and adverse mental health outcomes they face.

Statewide Legal Protections for LGBTQ People Who Experience Discrimination

Currently, about a quarter of Ohioans live in localities that have nondiscrimination ordinances on the books. This is unacceptable – nobody should be forced to move simply to have an opportunity to go to work and provide for their families.

Keeping Our Elders Resourced and Free From Discrimination

LGBTQ+ elders face increased rates of discrimination and poverty. Our elders fought for the LGBTQ+ community’s rights, and they deserve to be safe and not experience discrimination.

Curb Bullying

LGBTQ+ youth – and youth perceived to be LGBTQ+ – are often bullied. The first step to addressing bullying is to enumerate LGBTQ+ youth in anti-bullying legislation, but that’s not enough. Comprehensive bullying prevention involves addressing the school climate and district-level policy.
