Equality Ohio Responds to Supreme Court’s Ruling in U.S. v. Skrmetti

COLUMBUS, OH—June 18, 2025—Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti, a case that challenged Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

This ruling will have a significant impact on trans rights and legal precedent across the country—but no matter the outcome, our communities will continue to rise, care for each other, and thrive.

“This ruling is a loss, but it will not stop us,” said Executive Director Dwayne Steward. “We will keep showing up for our youth. No court can erase us, and no law can silence the truth that trans people belong and deserve care.”

“In Ohio, House Bill 68—the ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth is currently in effect, restricting access to hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgeries for transgender youth in Ohio,” added Kate Mozynski, Equality Ohio Legal Clinic Director. “While the law permits continuation of care for youth already receiving treatment before the ban, it prohibits new patients from starting this essential care. Despite these restrictions, we will keep fighting through every legal and community avenue to protect and restore access, and uphold the dignity and wellbeing of trans youth and all trans people in our state.”
