Press Release: Equality Ohio Speaks Out Against Criminalization of Transgender Communities

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Equality Ohio Speaks Out Against Criminalization of Transgender Communities

Columbus, Ohio—September 29, 2025  Equality Ohio is deeply concerned about the White House memorandum on political violence issued on September 25. LGBTQ+ Ohioans know too well the real-life consequences of targeted violence—the Equality Ohio Legal Clinic has already seen a 200% increase in calls to our intake line this year.

Transgender communities deserve protection, not unfair scrutiny.

Transgender people are more often the victims of violence than the perpetrators. This memorandum will do the opposite of what it purports and exacerbate an already growing crisis of violence against transgender communities.

While the memorandum claims to address political violence broadly, its vague language leaves communities—especially marginalized groups—concerned about how it could be used. Let us be clear: a memorandum does not change the law or the Constitution. This appears to be another stunt move by the administration, designed to create confusion and fear. Equality Ohio will continue monitoring federal actions.

Political violence has no place in Ohio, or in our democracy.

The threats are real and growing: gun violence falsely blamed on transgender people, intimidation of health care providers and schools, harassment at community events, threats against elected officials, and targeted digital and in-person attacks. Equality Ohio staff have experienced these threats firsthand, and through our Legal Clinic we support many Ohioans who face them simply for living authentically, advocating for rights, or speaking their truths. Violence harms communities, chills civic participation, and makes everyone less safe. We condemn it unequivocally.

Safety is built in community. That’s why we encourage Ohioans to get involved: sign up for our newsletter, join our growing Defenders of Equality, and participate in building solutions. We will continue sharing timely information to help individuals and organizations navigate this shifting landscape and support one another.

Transgender people, LGBTQ+ communities, and their allies are not the threat—we are part of America’s ongoing quest for freedom. LGBTQ+ Ohioans don’t need everyone to agree with us, but we do deserve respect. We pay taxes and we contribute to every part of our communities.Ohio is our home. Equality Ohio remains steadfast in its commitment to safety, collective liberation, and a democracy that truly includes everyone.

Our path forward is clear: stay focused, stay vigilant, and never lose sight of our goal—liberation for all of us.

We Say Trans. Period.
