Equality Ohio Celebrates Holidays by Announcing New Deputy Director, Siobhan Boyd-Nelson

New Deputy Director Boyd-Nelson poised to increase organizational capacity and strategically advance “legal” and “lived” LGBTQ+ equality

Columbus, Ohio – Equality Ohio announced this week the selection of a new Deputy Director. Former Equality Ohio Director of Development and External Relations, Siobhan Boyd-Nelson, will assume the position of Deputy Director immediately at the organization.

Siobhan is a native of Columbus, OH and is deeply passionate about LGBTQ+ and race equity. As Deputy Director, Siobhan will help staff, lay leaders, and volunteers work effectively by focusing on internal management, assisting with the organization’s implementation of its strategic plan, and facilitating a collaborative and efficient workflow among legal, policy, advocacy, communications, and development activities. She will continue her post as the lead trainer for Chroma Consulting, a DEI training social enterprise. She brings to the position extensive experience from previous roles at Kaleidoscope Youth Center, and Stonewall Columbus.

Siobhan has served on numerous community boards and is currently serving as a board member for Black, OUT & Proud. She is a member of the Columbus Business First 40 Under 40 Class of 2019 and a recipient of the Create Columbus Visionary Award (2018). Siobhan has lent her voice to discussions about LGBTQ+ identity, race, faith and the intersection of identities in forums across the state including Cincinnati Black Pride, LoveBoldly, the United Way of Central Ohio, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Ohio Diversity and Leadership Conference.

Prior to joining the nonprofit sector, Siobhan practiced domestic and appellate law and was a founding member of the Columbus Bar Association’s LGBT Committee. She is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC (2002) and the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University (2005). Siobhan lives in Reynoldsburg with her spouse Shay (they/them) and son Mars.

Executive Director, Alana Jochum, who has led the organization since 2016, promoted Siobhan to the role in light of the steady growth of Equality Ohio’s team and Siobhan’s extraordinary leadership. “Siobhan is a steadfast leader who has been helping to manifest Equality Ohio’s vision and mission in numerous ways since she joined our team in 2018. She leads from love, manages with consistency, and centers equity. We are excited to be able to finally announce her stepping into this important role as we head into the New Year.”

“I have every confidence that Siobhan will continue advancing the strong leadership, values, and advocacy demonstrated by her work in LGBTQ+ rights over the past decade,” said Joe Matuszewski, Board Chair for Equality Ohio Education Fund.
